[imp] Best Practice for managing users < 1000

Hello Everyone,
Back in the 2.x days of imp I had very complex
setup for using imp with cyrus. The big plus with cyrus
was that you can set up "virtual users" without creating
unix user accts which pop/imap uses by default. I have a new
system now and I'm wondering if setting a new cyrus implementation
is even worth the headache. Is there any easy alternative to creating
virtual users, either through an sql or ldap backend that can talk to
imp?
