This keeps getting stranger.  This is _exactly_ the problems I was having 
_before_ I traced it down:

If you follow the thread, you'll see that Chuck "did something" to fix it :)

Thus, this behavior should have been corrected by this patch.  I have no 
problems here - my weekly trash cleanup happened yesterday and it told me 
it had deleted 600 some-odd messages right when i got to the opening folder.
