Regarding my EAPI question... since all those who replied did so offlist, let 
me go ahead and say onlist that the answer I found (and seems to work) is:

CPPFLAGS=-DEAPI ./configure <options>

And as a reminder, this is to compile PHP with EAPI support incase you have 
apache with modssl.

To those suggesting I recompile apache and php and use SO's instead of DSO's, 
shame on you! =)
