[imp]Keep alive during message composition?

I know that the session is automatically logged out by
session.gc_maxlifetime  in PHP. But, I have a couple of users who
take a while to compose a message.  

I want to balance the need for rapid logout from public computers
with sustaining sessions for people who are actively working on
composing a message.  Right now, PHP doesn't recognize typing into
the compose window an 'activity' which will sustain the session.

Any suggestions for how to deal with this dilemma?
