This happens because PHP isn't aware of Kanji multibyte charsets and some
functions we need to use to process the message texts mess things up like this.

Until we don't have the automatic UTF converting I talked about a lot in the
past, or until PHP supports more charsets including Kanji, this won't be fixed.
