This isn't going to solve your problem, but I guess it isn't Apache
that is actually at fault.  I had a similar problem a while ago. 
What it turned out to be was there was an attempted connection to the
localhost to transact a Poppassd password change through an stunnel
implemented secure channel, and the remote listener had stopped
listening. The PHP script was running and running, trying to get a
hold of that remote server.

The strace -p ( or truss -p if your OS is solaris ) would help. Do a
lsof of the process and see what webpage caused the problem. That may
provide more clues about the cause.
