I'm getting nailed by these segfaults as well.  I've tried PHP 4.1.2 
through 4.2.3 and get the segfaults in each case.

Could you please post your ./configure command for the 4.1.2 
installation?  There could be a hint in there as to why you weren't 
getting segfaults on that version.
