Which I think was settled as a segfault in apache...    I assume
you are not seeing any seg faults in your apache error logs???

Does that httpd.log contains the error log, access log, or both?

That is strange, as it implies that the php times out, which would mean
it couldn't have segfaulted...

Do you see an httpd process using a lot of cpu time during the time this
is happening?

Have (can) you tested without ssl to see if it makes any difference?
