A clean patch would be great.  The problem comes in portability between 
DBs - the size of a DB field may not be the same across different DBs.  And 
it would be a pain in the butt installation, for a general installation at 
least, to have the admin wade through DB documentation to determine the 
exact storage size of DB fields.
