ok. i added the $conf['filter']['driver'] = 'prefs'; line to the 
imp/config/conf.php. still have the same behaviour. i checked Mike C's 
post to the dev list on the ob_gzhandler, and updated to php 4.3.0. still 
have the problem, though it seems that it is tied to the etc/zlib/zlib.c 
extention. i'll keep an eye on that just in case. 
all i can think of is to flush out the preference table as tony suggested, 
but that will cause more havoc than good.
