[imp] how to know a user have logged in ?

i have an apps like http://apps.example.com which can only be accessed after a successful
authentication. to streamline all apps, i intend to make imp login as the single signon mechanism.

problem: how does external apps knows that a user has been successfully authenticated thru imp ?
btw, i am running the sql session handler (mysql).

pls advise.
