[imp] What's the advantage of using CVS?

Hi all,

Sorry if this is the wrong group and sorry if this is a stupid question,
but CVS doesn't say much to me.

I see lots of people are using the CVS versions of all projects.
What is the advantage of using CVS instead of the tarball releases?
Are those newer version, none stable?
Is it recommended to use CVS in production environments? or use
the stable releases?

And my last question ... ;)
Are there any good documents to setup Horde/IMP/etc completely via CVS?
There was a PDF on the Horde site but it has a dead link.
