You'll have to store them in the session somehow, and check for them in
status.php. It'll be easier in HEAD, where the notification system stores
messages across page loads for you, and you can just push them onto the
notification stack in redirect.php.

I'm guessing that's why you were seeing problems with maintenance screens?
