[imp] sendmail error

I have recently upgraded php and started getting "There was an error sending
your message: sendmail [/usr/lib/sendmail] not executable" errors when
sending messages.  Everything was working like a charm before I upped to
php4.3.1.  I found advice in the archives about switching from sendmail to
smtp, which is not a solution i want to use.  i have also found lots of
advice about ensuring the right sendmail path is used -- but mine is
configured peoperly for /usr/lib/sendmail (i have sym linked to qmail
/usr/lib/sendmail -> /var/qmail/bin/sendmail).  i have some other php
scripts running that use the php mail function, same path for sendmail is
configged in php.ini.  i have another box set up pretty much the same,
except i haven't upped php on that one yet.  any ideas? lastly, i am on
imp3.2.
