[imp] Cannot use password with a \ in it to login to imap server

I am using the setup as below. Users with a \ in their password like 12\Asd34
cannot login. However if they type in 12\\Asd34 they could login.

Now with the older version of Horde/IMP (Redhat 7, Apache 1.3.23, php 4.1.2,
openssl 0.9.6c, horde 2.1, imp 3.1, turba 1.1, mysql 3.23.39) a user could have
a \ in the password and still login with no problem.

Now is this a security 'plus' with the newer version as someone was telling me
that a \ is not recommended for use in password. However there is no black and
white answer from some 'standard' organisation about \ not recommended for use.

Current setup
===========
Redhat 9 (2.4.20-2.41smp)
Apache 2.0.40-21.3
php 4.2.2-17
openssl 0.9.7a
pear 1.1
mod_ssl-2.0.40
horde-2.2.3-1
imp 3.2.1-1
turba 1.2-1
mysql-server 3.23.56
