[imp] not able to login from imp using imap to remote systems

About says it all right there.  Connection refused by the remote server.
So there is a firewall (ipchains, iptables, tcp_wrappers, actual firewall,
etc) blocking access, or a misconfiguration causing the same type of
rejection.  Or, you configured the imap server name or port wrong?
