I don't know if this will help, but I had the same problem (twice) after
installing horde's php rpms. I could send mail using sendmail, but not
smtp. It was fixed when I did a fresh install of PEAR. I didn't know how I
could prove it, but it appeared as though pear_smtp got corrupted somehow.
