Very weird. I *only* use local imap servers. (Latest c-client + imapd from
the Pine package).

I can provide more details of my build if you wish. I'm sure things are
broken, but I (appear) to be using a similar setup as you are, and mine works.

PHP-4.3.2/ZendOptimizer 1.3.0/latest-apache_Ben_SSL (1.3.x), imap4r1
2003.338 server, c-client which came with that (statically-linked into the
php module + httpsd binary), etc, etc. I built everything with gcc-3.2.2
(w/stack-protect patches, *and* -fstack-protector enabled). I generally do
optimised builds (-O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -mcpu=pentium2 -march=pentium2
-s), etc, etc.

My apache is a beast, tipping the scales at almost 3MB.

3045648 Jul 28 01:58 /usr/sbin/httpsd

And the ldd for it scrolls my terminal. (Too many web-devs who don't know
WTF they want, so I gave them everything.) Shockingly, it works.

Perhaps, or it's something sneakier. Are the imapd's different from host to
host?

Are you running your localhost connections through inetd or tcpd? Are
connection limits being triggered?
