I would choose option 2.  I'm running RedHat 9 with qmail (from source) + 
horde/imp/turba (rpms).  I got the rpms as part of KRUD - see http://www.
tummy.com/krud/ .  Everything worked very smoothly.

The only drawback is not getting HEAD updates as fast as I might like.
