[imp] sendmail not working

OK I have tried everything that is shown in the FAQs to try.
I can sendmail from the command line.
I have php safe mode turned off.
I have file uploads turned On
I have double checked my edits of the config files.

imp will not send mail - the dialog window flashes and what ever I typed is wiped clean.
I can see the IMAP authentication - login and then logout.
