Maybe your IMAP server only accepts PLAIN authentication? This was my 
problem and I only solved it by patching PHP. I did not understand why 
PHP does not allow PLAIN auth when you have SSL activated but it is 
possible to "correct" that by modifying the corresponding imap function.
