It matters very little what SMTP server you use to Horde. IMAP is somewhat 
important but IMP works with all the major ones.  PHP versions and settings are 
more important, and you will probably want mysql up and running.
I use qmail (maildir), courier-imap, and imp 3.2 if you need help.
