If through the use of an .htaccess file or similar mechanism I get asked
for a login and password (you'll get a actual dialog box pop up on the
client that is authenticating to the website), that is HTTP
authentication. It isn't an IMP mechanism, but according to Jan it
will put the username that is in use into the name field.
If it is being populated beyond that, it's likely the client remembering
the login info for that site.
