Hi Michalis,

The only solution that you can realize without the help of any other 
software than IMP would be to set the sender in the preferences, I 
would think.

The two options I would suggest you:
1) Use a mailbox spool that supports virtual domains
    (e.g. Cyrus IMAPD, http://asg.web.cmu.edu/cyrus/imapd/)
    so that the users log in using user1 at domain1.tld
2) Use something like Postfix canonical rewriting (have the
    MTA rewrite the From and Envelope Sender address from
    user1.domain1(@domain1.tld) to user1 at domain1.tld;
    I think most or all MTAs support this, however, as I don't
    know the others very well, I am unable to provide you with
    pointers - for Postfix see "man canonical"(5) or
    http://www.postfix.org/canonical.5.html
