[imp] number of simultaneous users

Dear admins:

I wish to monitor (with MRTG) the number of simultaneous
IMP logged-on users.

I am currently counting the number of session files in
the /tmp directory like "ls -l /tmp/sess-*|wc -l" and
send that value to MRTG, but somehow I do not trust
this value...

Is there a more efficient and correct way to do this ?
