[imp] Trouble Authenticating

I'm having difficulty in getting IMP to authenticate to my UW-IMAP server
(running on localhost).  Curiously, in the syslog it gives the messages:

Jun 26 10:36:37 gonzo imapd[23652]: connect from 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1)
Jun 26 10:36:37 gonzo imapd[23652]: imap service init from 127.0.0.1
Jun 26 10:36:37 gonzo imapd[23652]: Logout user=??? host=localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]

But when I try a regular IMAP client and get a failed login, it actually
displays the username rather than '???' in the syslog.  Could it be that
IMP is not passing a coherent username to the IMAP client?  I tried using
netcat to simulate an IMAP server to verify this, but IMP doesn't seem to
want to connect to that.
