Well, I don't think it's very uncommon to use the email address as username 
to login. As far as I understood, the 2 lines of code are for removing the 
realm... ?

When I login with "user" the complete user would be "user at realm", when I 
login with "user at domain", the user would be "user at domain@realm"... in both 
cases, the calculated user id would be "user" which isn't correct.
