Yes. It was copied from the way IMP did "realms" at the time.

I assume you mean the XML configuration doesn't support it (true). But
it would still be possible to do by hand...
I'd rather the XML configuration script was modified to support the realms,
than that the realms were removed... I don't know if that is possible or
not.
You can define the realms by hand. The way/docs to do this were "lost"
when the XML configuration was added...
Since forwards is part of sork, and all of sork has the same realm issue,
the problem should be addressed "sork-wide" and not just in forwards. Also,
it should be addressed for all drivers/backends, and not just for LDAP.
