I tried that and there was no joy in fixing the problem, but then I began to 
wonder if one of the various config files had gotten corrupted somehow, so I 
replaced the IMP and TURBA ones from the distro.

Then revised my servers.php file properly...

And that got IMP working! So far so good...

Does anyone have an example of the settings to configure Turba for mySQL-based 
personal address books? (I think that's were I went wrong before...)
