Right.  It's storing a one-way hash of the password against username
at the moment, so it's easy to store per-user data (especially if
it's not critical, like ALERTS, so it's ok if the proxy dies)

Since it uses select() for the FDs and iterates through them anyway,
it's hopefully just an entry in the switch statement to trap alerts 
(and other untagged responses).
