That would be a nifty approach.  The user could be redirected to
a maintenance screen that lists the pending maintenance tasks (if
any are scheduled for this login sequence), and s/he could select
the ones that they would like to perform before being directed to
their mailbox.

A little more work, but I think that's the friendlier option.
