Rob,
  PEAR will be looked for in BASE_PHP_DIR/PEAR. If PHP is configured to 
use /usr/local/lib/php as its base include path, then the 
/usr/local/lib/php/PEAR directory will be the one used.
  Check phpinfo for a --with-config-file-path option in the Configure 
Command section. If there isn't one, then I believe /usr/local/lib/php 
is the default.
