Great, thanks! Again, I want to do this over a weekend (so I'll be able to take
care of any problems that come up; I'm still assuming that I only need to "rpm
-e" the old packages and "rpm -i" the new ones, taking care of php.ini).

So, I'll try it this weekend and post the results.
