[horde] pear install Log

I have 2 machines using the same exact verion of PEAR/Horde/Zend/APXS
on machine 1 I get this from 'pear install Log'
downloading Log-1.8.6.tgz ...
Starting to download Log-1.8.6.tgz (30,793 bytes)
.........done: 30,793 bytes

on machine 2 (identical command pear install Log) I get:
downloading Log-1.8.6.tar ...
Starting to download Log-1.8.6.tar (-1 bytes)
.............done: 47,298 bytes
Extracted file /tmp/tmpSIbaNj/Log-1.8.6/docs/guide.txt does not have the 
correct file size '' (37028 e
xpected). Archive may be corrupted.

What is going on here?  "Am I taking crazy pills or what?!"  Why is one 
assuming a tar.gz while the broken one is simply a tar?
