Following a good suggestion from the list, in the last few days I was forced to
upgrade to 4.0.4 starting from 4.0.0, since I encountered segmentation faults
when the number of messages exceeded 20 msgs. Now my installation works very
well and for the moment I can't see any kind of problem

Sounds like something is a bit funky with your install... maybe try the very
latest 2.3 cvs?
