The only alternatives are MySQL and shared memory; I'd recommend shared
memory because it would be easier to set up.  I'm only suggesting this as
a troubleshooting step to isolate where the problem might be; if it's a
lot of work you may want to reconsider.  But if it were me, that's what
I'd try next.
