I don't receive new mail notification...

 What can cause not to receive the New Mail popup?
 I have:

 $default->newmail_popup = true;
 $default->refresh_delay = 300;
 
 But I do not see the newmail popups (nor any other kind
 of message, until I refresh the mailbox view)...
