message composition fails

hi,
 upon updating to the latest cvs (-r HEAD @ 11am pacific time), the
message composition link fails.

 when i click the link, the compose window appears, but appears blank with
the dark blue background.

 the source of the page stops at:

 i also noticed that an apache process dies right after clicking 'compose'
/var/log/messages:

 any ideas on how to further debug what's killing apache and stopping the
page from loading?
