Turn your preferences to not open the compose window in different browser
window and see if there are any error messages or warning on the screen or
somewhere hidden in the source code.

Generally if Apache segfaults it's a problem with php. 
Check out the php mailing lists and http://bugs.php.net/how-to-report.php.
