Question about shared memory vs. MySQL for active_sessions on Solaris 8 for 2.2.7 and 3.x

Solaris 8, MySQL 2.23.47, PHP 4.1.2.

I would like to know the performance gain / hit for using shared memory?

I just added a substantial amount of memory to the server which is hosting
IMP. I am seeing a vastly improved response from Apache. I would like to
know if I can gain more speed by switching from MySQL to shm for
active_sessions?

Also, I have read in the archives that $shm_size needs to be increased.
Have other Solaris 8 users made other changes when using shm?

Finally, is the transition as simple as changing the local.inc file?

Thanks in advance for the information.

No, unless you want to manually patch it by hand. You'd have to either
search the CVS releng_3 branch to locate the changes and make them,
or download releng_3 and do a diff on the trees to find the changes and
make them, or wait for the next release.

So that the user can read the login screen and the New User Introduction
if he doesn't read/speak/understand the default language. This is a
rather rare case probably, but a real case non-the-less.

Not that I know of, but I'm not an expert here.

This has bugged me for months, and I've been trying to bite my tongue,
but *please* when people post messages like "fixed in cvs" or "in
the cvs version" please specify the branch (releng_3 or head or both).

Sorry to complain, but this is just confusing to people, and not that
hard to fix by including the branch in the email...

If I knew if this was already merged, I had told him the branch. ;-)
