According to RFC822 only 7bit characters can appear in To: address.
_You_ broke the RFC by setting up these accounts. 
Even if your system allowed to do it, and your tests were succesfull, 
it means only that this mail system is not 'tightly' written.

Your students give their (invalid) email addresses to their friends - mail 
systems used by many of them will not even tranport messages to your 
students.
What you observe in IMP is the same thing which happens on these remote 
mailservers - message bounces to senders and postmasters. 
It is _you_ who made this additional traffic.

The only proper way is to do the mail addresses migration.
