[imp] Login Failed

in the file /var/log/messages I see

ipop3d[16722]: pop3 service init from 127.0.0.1
ipop3d[16722]: Command stream end of file while reading line user =??? 
host=UNKNOWN

The first line seems OK.
What's the meaning of the second line. It sounds like user is not received 
at all!!
Is this right?

my mail server is sendmail
