[imp] serious mysql or imap problems on a imp server

The question remains as to what the c-client in your php is trying for
authentication.  Hopefully, you server only advertises plaintext, and
hence your php hopefully only tries plaintext.  But the only way to know
for sure is to check the logs and/or sniff the wire.

AFAIK it should work in either place.  There are some small optimizations
the OS can make if on the web server via localhost which may give it a slight
performance boost.  But the real big gain would be to put it on the machine
which has the lightest load.  Load here would include network bandwidth as
well as the usual cpu use and so on.

I think the general idea is to put it on the web server, so that connections
to the imap server are reduced.  This is the way most people will use it.
But it should work in either place. Which is best for your site will depend
on your setup, load, etc.
