I've switched to 4.2.3 - we will see if it fixes the problem. Many thanks again to Eric and his patience. :)

Maybe you should try the 4.2.X releases of php. I never experienced any
problems with horde under those releases.
I'm currently using 4.3.0 with the HEAD version also. Of course, my user
base is really small and the bleeding edge is not too scary :P
