Well seems that pear-1.0.1 from ftp.horde.org have a broken Net_SMTP 1.1.0.
Update to Net_SMTP 1.1.1 and imp will send mail using SMTP.

If you are using redhat you must install pear executable. See
http://pear.php.net/manual/en/installation.getting.php

# lynx -source http://go-pear.org | php

and upgrade Net_SMTP

# pear upgrade Net_SMTP
