I'm currently using gettext 0.11.5-1 from debian unstable. This one is the 
newest, I think. Which version do you use and does it work correctly?

As I'm very new in making translations, do you think of using the extract.pl 
and xgettext.sh scripts in the po directory, when you mentioned the "old" tools?
