since the certificates have the name embedded within the certificate, I
can't see how you can have virtual hosts with only 1 certificate. 

AFAIK, you would need to have a unique IP address for each virtual
domain and a unique certificate for each domain for it to work.

My guess is that the Apache documentation covers this fairly well.
