This was a weird one! Thanks for all the suggestions you guys offered -
they were a great learning experience for me, and got me a lot more
familiar with Horde.

In my servers.php file my "server" value was set to "localhost". This
had been working fine up until the mail server had it's melt-down and
kernel panic. After I rebooted the server I was getting some strange
"permission denied" messages from sendmail in the mail log, and Imp
logins stopped working. After a search of Google groups for similar
problems, late yesterday I found someone else who had experienced the
same problem with the sendmail "permission denied" messages. It turns
out that when the server restarted, the loopback interface was not
assigned an IP address! The /etc/hosts file identified "localhost" as
127.0.0.1, but there was no interface with that IP address assigned.

As soon as I assigned lo0 it's IP address the sendmail error messages
stopped appearing and Imp logins started working again. Funny how much
better things work when the loopback interface is fully configured :)
