I stand corrected. It must be that the IMAP server on my new Debian etch
system is behaving differently. As a matter of fact, one of the more
recent entries in the changelog for the new uw-imapd package is:

     Improve local cdbs snippets:
     + Fix namespaces.

That must be it.
