[imp] Differences between multipart/mixed and multipart/alternative

never mind.

after a little more digging in here, I found the solution in
imp/config/mime_drivers.php ... setting
$mime_drivers['imp']['alternative']['show'] to "true" did the trick

feeling a bit silly now...
